The first thing that was a bit scary (besides the packing) was the long flight. Fortunately (or not) we have paid attention to the flight and thought about it beforehand. We had 2 restrictions in our head:
- price
- duration of flight
Since it is quite hard to impossible to find a charter (direct) flight to Asia wihch will take us there in December and bring us back in May we had to go with conventional airlines to deliver our bodies to Asia.
Main thing again was price and the amount of connections. We thought that we managed to find the best option possible : one connection in Doha excatly in the middle of the route. Qatar would take us from Stockholm to Doha in 6 hours and then Qatar would bring us from Doha to Phuket in another 6 hours. With 1 hour layover in Doha.
The aftermath: Overall the fight went well. We got a fair amount of wining from the baby on the second leg and a lot of sleeping on the first leg. Need to mention also that the flight took off in Stockholm at 21:45 and landed in Doha around 5:45 (local time) or so and our next flight took off just 1 hour later and landed in Phuket at 17:30.
Was the timing of the flight rigt?
I think so, it was good that the baby slept the whole first leg and was pretty tired during the second part of second leg so we got also about 3 hours of sleep from her.
Was the airline good? Qatar!!
Yes, it was good, but I think based on the hype around it being the best I was expecting a little more. What exactly? I don't know. Qatar was as good as Turkish was during our first ever flight to Asia. Would I choose Qatar again? absolutely, if the price is right! :)
Was it OK to fly from Stockholm?
I think it was good. It is of course an additional expence but getting rid of one more flight leg was worth it (I think). Besides we managed to combine the 2 days in Sto with some family time and it was good.
Was the connection in Doha enough - 1 hour?
I think it was good choise, we had to run and there was absolutely no time to change diper or feed the baby or anything else, but we then didn't get too tired of waiting. We discussed the possibility of choosing a looooonger connection time - like mayby 12-16 hours (or more) and getting a hotel room and having a proper rest time but it might have positive and negative effects. I looked at the connection time as a bandait which needed to be ripped off quickly rather than pulling it slowly and painfully (but I might be wrong!). Maybe we will try something else next time.
