In Yogyakarta we stay at the 5start hotel (because we can :) ). To be honest just the breakfast is worth the price we pay for the room. Anyway, the post is not about that.

Customer service in Indonesia (and in SE Asia in general) is very much in focus. It doesn't matter a hotel is 5 star or 3 star, you will always get help and friendly attitude. But the 'downside' of a 5 star hotel is that you start feeling yourself like a sultan or something. For the time it takes you to check in and reach your room you will probably interact with 10-15 people all trying to help you (in a good way). Everybody will "Sir" or "Madam" you and it feels quite awkward for us. Everybody is bowing and stopping to greet you when walking by.

The second or third day I went to the gym to work out a bit (it was 1 hour before closing and it was empty). There was one guy from the staff overlooking the gym. He asked me my room number and once I said it his response was "Welcome mr.Anton"... Creepy! I found out later that they are required to learn names of the people staying here. I guess it was easy in our case because they could internally refer to us as "those 2 white dudes with cute baby Alisa, who never leave the hotel". Just to mention that there are about couple of hundreds rooms in here so learning names every couple of days takes some mental exercise.

One more thing we get a lot was when the stuff asked us about the duration of our stay and we mentioned about 20 days - everybody was first surpriced and then asked in different words "what the hell will you do here for 20 days?". We tried to explain that we just here to chill. Anyway, as it turned out we will cut short our stay here and go to Bali for a week.

anyway, Royal Ambarrukmo is a great hotel, and if you get a chance to stay here - do it!
