Internet in Thailand was a problem, but then we needed it purely for social interactions. In Malaysia we need Internet for more business purposes. Alena is using a lot of traffic for conference calls and video communications.

The house we stay in has internet connection so we were not worried about it. One day before we arrived the host mentioned that the Internet is broken and it might take 'forever' to get it fixed so we had to figure out some alternatives. I googled around and found out that it is possible to purchase unlimited mobile broadband at 4G speeds for good price. Problem Solved.

NOT!

when we arrived at the property there was a paper with SSID and password for wifi. We managed to connect and the internet seemed to exist on a very (VERY!) slow speed. We assumed that this is the issue when the host mentioned broken internet (that the internet exists but it is superslow). Apparently slow internet it is normal in Malaysia. Slow home internet! I don't know why, maybe they still use some old wires to deliver internet to people or something. No Idea. Anyway we had to figure out mobile broadband for us. I found a location where we can get sim-cards and get ourselves unlimited 4G. Not so easy!

Pretty much every operator has an offer with unlimited traffic but all of them require you to be a resident of Malaysia. Tourists can only register a pre-paid sim card which has no such thing as unlimited internet. We spend like 2 days googling and walking to offices to find out the best prepaid package. We got tired and frustrated because there are very few straight forward programs which tell you how much you are getting.

Very common thing here is to offer programs which have streaming music for free and you get unlimited data for major music streaming services but then you get like 2Gb for everything else. Or you might get video streaming for free or games for free (or combinations of the above) etc. One operator tells you that you get 8Gb for free per month BUT every weekend you get +2GB and you can watch youtube for free from 2am to 10am and some other stuff.

Anyway we ended up getting a package with 12Gb traffic (the most they had) and free social media and music streaming for 50 MYR (100 sek).

PS: Operators have a trick which when you have unlimited internet you can only use it in your phone. You can't create a hotspot and connect your whole family to that unlimited internet. Somehow they detect that.
